California Railroad Museum

On our way home from golf in Kelowna, B.C. and an Alaska cruise out of Seattle, we stopped by Greg and Susan Yim's house in Walnut Creek for a brief visit before returning home. We had a whole day there so we decided to take Amtrak to Sacramento to visit the famous California Railroad Museum. I loved the place but Carolyn wasn't blown away. As you can see, lots of old railroad engines and cars, and also lots of model trains.

This was an old forward cab locomotive which saw a lot of service in California. I first saw one of these when we visited relatives in the LA area in 1948. At the time I thought it was almost frighteningly loud. Greg and I got a full lecture on the workings of the various controls.
The museum had an extensive collection of early Lionel, American Flyer, Marklin and Marx trains, most of which were donated by Thomas W. Sefton. Altogether the collection numbers over 7,000 pieces. The toy train exhibit area also features a large O gauge train layout.
