June 1984 Lake Powell
As often occurs when two dudes get together and drink a few beers, the subject turns to exploring. My friend John and I were fond of dreaming of places to explore and planning exactly how we'd make the trip. In this case, we had both long wanted to explore Lake Powell, mainly because of its exquisite beauty and the fact that is a totally huge lake. I had a 15' aluminum boat which we deemed fit for the voyage so all we had to do was decide what to take with us. Our final solution was to put total emphasis on just two commodities, beer and gasoline. We had so much of that on board that it a took a couple days of drinking before we could get the boat to run on plane. The little yellow tent you see in some of the photos was used only by John as he had concerns about insects. I thought it was way too hot to sleep in a tent so I spent my nights lying on my back, watching the bats chase down the moths. We started very early each morning so as to do most of our exploring when it was cooler and the lake was calm. We usually knocked off at about two in the afternoon and that gave us the best choice of camping spots for the night. We spent our late afternoons enjoying the envious stares of the house boaters who wondered why we always had the best landing spots with sand beaches and sometimes with shade. The daily high temps were just over 100 and the water was 70.
