1970 Baja Expedition

This happened so long ago that I'm not sure of the year, let alone the month. The "expedition" was planned and executed by members of the Beckman Instruments rod and gun club. Normally this club contented itself with outings on day boats for a little ocean fishing but this time they decided to do something much more adventurous. We planned to drive down to Ensenada, Mexico, stay overnight at a fish camp south of Ensenada, and then go back to Ensenada and drive across the peninsula to the village of San Felipe on the Gulf of California. Going home, of course, we planned to take the highway up through Mexicali. What the made the trip an "expedition" is that there was no road going to San Felipe at that time, other than an ill-defined trail. Our vehicles consisted on my VW camper van, a four-wheel drive Jeep pickup, a two-wheel drive International Scout and a new VW dune buggy The crew in my camper consisted of me, my dad and my good friend John Citso. The VW van was the only vehicle that made it through the whole trip with no problems other than one flat tire. The Jeep blew its rear differential, the VW dune buggy sucked so much dust into its engine that it lost considerable compression and Scout got stuck. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the really treacherous parts of the journey as we were hanging on for dear life at those time.
